When the weather forecast looks questionable in the days leading up to a session, I always try to wait until the day of to make a decision about whether we will risk it or whether we will reschedule. The forecast in our area can change multiple times just in one day so it isn't beneficial to anyone to stress over what it looks like a week ahead or even a couple days before! I think 95% of the time, everything works out totally fine and we end up being able to keep our original date. Everyone benefits from not having to postpone because your schedules and mine can be so busy that finding an alternate day just adds more stress to what should be something fun! Not to mention that rescheduling just means you have to start the whole weather watching process all over again for another day!
Unfortunately, every now and then I make the call to stick with our plans and then the rain just persists on running us off.
The day of Sammi's session, we thought we were going to catch enough of a break to get her entire session done in downtown Marietta and that hopefully the rain would hold off until we were all done. But it actually started raining shortly after we met! We had gotten her first outfit done before it started to sprinkle and while she was changing outfits the skies just got darker with clouds. Sammi was awesome, though, and decided that since we were together anyhow to go ahead and see how many more pictures we could get done before it started to pour! We managed to get two outfits done but it was obvious from the radar that we wouldn't be able to finish without getting completely soaked. We ended up deciding to wrap it up for the night and schedule another time to finish her session.
I'm still so surprised at how incredible her hair looks even though it was so misty out! I actually love cloudy days especially in an urban location and the soft light of overcast skies always works well with fair skin. The pictures of her in her white dress are some of my favorites from the entire Class of 2023! I just love how Sammi didn't let the rain bother her or ruin her experience! Knowing there are just some things out of our control and being adaptable is a skill we should all have. Life is just that way sometimes and it's all good!
Sunny Days are So Much Better Though!
We decided to finish Sammi's session a week later and ended up with absolutely perfect weather! It all worked out so well because it meant we could use a location we hadn't originally planned that was too far from Marietta to use in one night anyhow: her own yard! Sammi and her family have this beautiful property in Waleska, GA which is more than 40 minutes away from Marietta where we first met. It would have been entirely too far to use both locations in one evening but having the opportunity to take some of her senior portraits at home was something she couldn't pass up when we decided to meet again!
Sammi, thank you so much for asking me to take some of your senior portraits! You are beautiful and sweet and I hope you have an amazing first year at Alabama!
