My daughter turned 16 years old this year! And I still can't believe I just typed that sentence.
My older boys chose to celebrate on a smaller scale - a trip to Six Flags with friends and an Atlanta United soccer match. But sixteen is just a little different for our girls, isn't it? Though I'm not sure how that tradition started it certainly didn't end with us! Having a summer birthday means that a lot of times her friends aren't available to celebrate because they're out of town - especially because her birthday is so close to the Fourth of July holiday. So, even though we had an intimate party planned I knew several girls wouldn't be able to come and I wanted to make this birthday extra special. So I reached out secretly to a bunch of her friends to see if they could help me pull together a last minute surprise and nearly all of them made it happen!
She already had a friend from out town visiting so that gave me an excuse to plan a special photoshoot with the two of them and I let her know that I was including two other girls from school. We decided to go to a new sunflower field not far from home and that provided the perfect setting! We started taking pictures and in a few minutes the rest of the group arrived to surprise her! It was absolutely perfect! Even now I'm teary just thinking about how sweet they all are and how amazing it was to be able to pull this off with just a few hours notice! It was a wonderful way to let her know how loved she is.
