7 Types of Locations
Let's talk about locations & seasons and how these 2 things are intertwined!
One of the most important decisions we'll make together about your senior session is: What location do you want for your senior portraits?
I give my clients 7 different choices:
- Nature: This includes an open field, trees, your favorite hiking trail. Basically anywhere outside in the fresh air!
- Water: Obviously related to nature, but this is more specific. Does your family spend a lot of time on the lake? It also includes a stream or waterfall or even the beach!
- Flowers: so many girls ask me for a field of flowers as their preferred location! It also can include a pretty plant nursery, a garden or spring blooms on trees.
- Rustic: The obvious choice here is a farm with a barn or perhaps you have a horse and want to do it at the stable.
- Urban: This location can be somewhere close by like downtown Canton or Marietta or we can go into Atlanta. It includes city streets, old or modern buildings, or a skyline view.
- Unique: This option is completely unlimited! Maybe you really want a wall mural or the subway or a library. It can even be at a petting zoo or in a museum or an airport hanger!
- Studio: Last but not least, you can choose to do your session inside at a studio. There are a bunch of places to rent for a couple hours either close by or in Atlanta!
3 Questions to Ask Yourself
Here are some questions to ask yourself when you start considering which kind of location you'd like:
1. What kind of outfits do I want to wear? If you are planning to wear an outfit with heels, then a field isn't going to be a great idea. A place with sidewalks would be much better! If your favorite outfit is distressed jeans and your white shoes you take care not to crease then again a city or unique setting makes more sense than going to the lake where the ground might be muddy or wet. If you've had your heart set on wearing a long boho kind of dress or skirt then it really would look great in a field of tall grass or flowers! Try to think about the kind of things you'll feel most comfortable in and then match the setting to your outfits.
2. Are you allergic or really afraid of bugs? Then definitely don't ask for a field of flowers! You'll only be uncomfortable and we really don't want to have to use your epi-pen during your session! We can still get a similar feel to your pictures without having to dodge bees and mosquitos.
3. Are you more particular about how your hair looks or worried about being hot and sweaty? Then a studio location might be the very best choice because we won't be outside in the wind or the sun. When we're outside you definitely have to let go of any perfectionistic tendencies because there's a lot you can't control.
Time & Season Limits to Certain Locations
Lastly, we need to consider the location you want with the seasons that particular location might be more readily available or better conditions.
Here are some examples!
- if your heart is set on a field of flowers then you need to schedule your session sometime in June, July or August when we have lots of options. Don't book your session for September because there won't be any flowers left by then. You can also wait until spring and book your session mid-March to mid-April when a lot of trees will be in bloom.
- do you want fall leaves and color in the background? Then there's really only about a month that autumn will give you for this! Typically the 2nd week of October until mid-November. And definitely don't procrastinate scheduling your session if this is what you want because this is without question the BUSIEST time of year for all photographers! October and November sessions book far in advance.
- when choosing a studio, urban or unique location your options aren't limited much at all for time of year! These kind of sessions can be done any season so there is a lot of flexibility.
I know it seems like a lot to consider but that's why I'M here! Let's talk about what you want and I will help you figure out the best time and the best location for your session! Give me a call and ask me any questions you have and we'll start planning the perfect senior session for you!
