One of the top 3 questions I get from clients is: What do we do if it rains? The answer to that isn't always simple. As your senior photographer I have to consider all the possibilities and whether we reschedule or go through with your scheduled appointment all depends on several factors:
1. Is it going to be an all day rain event? - If the weather radar shows the morning of your session that it is highly likely that the entire day will be filled with rain then we definitely will reschedule. There isn't any point in you getting ready for nothing.
2. Is it going to be scattered or isolated rain showers? - If, however, the rain is going to be in and out and more unpredictable then it's best to go through with your session because 9 times out of 10 everything will be fine! Even if we get hit with a quick shower we can take a few minutes to let it pass and then get back to shooting.
3. How busy or flexible is your schedule? - I only schedule 2 sessions per week so that I have flexibility on my calendar to reschedule your session if necessary but finding an alternate date for you can be difficult if you have work and sports or activities to also schedule around. That's why I try to honor your time by not rescheduling too early because you already have this on your calendar for a day that works for you and it's best if we can keep our appointment rather than trying again. And a rescheduled date isn't a guarantee that we will have better weather on the new date either!
4. What location are we using for your senior pictures? - If your session is out in an open field then we aren't going to have anywhere to take cover if we need to. But if your session is in an urban location where we might be able to find a covered spot or if your session is in a studio then we absolutely can shoot without worrying about getting wet!
5. How concerned are you about how the weather will impact your hair or outfits? - If your hair is like mine and the humidity is going to wreak havoc on your hairstyle then let's consider a different day. If you're more adventurous and think that rain and an unexpected shower or two is just part of life and might be fun to just go with what life hands us then I'm up for that also!
The answer all depends on your personality and preferences! Now, of course, we aren't going to take unnecessary risks if the weather forecast has severe thunderstorms or tornado watch! lol We'll all just stay safe at home!
For Jackson's session, we were in an urban location where we were able to find covered spots and the rain showers were on again off again so we went ahead with his session in spite of the forecast! We did bump up his appointment to an earlier time when the radar was more promising and we were very efficient and got his session done quickly. I think you'd hardly know we did his pictures on a rainy day! I do appreciate clients who are flexible and willing to at least give it a try. I figure it's worth at least trying to get some of your session done and if the rain keeps us from completing your portraits then we'll just finish up another day. Finding time on your calendar to work in a quick hour to finish your portraits can be so much easier than pushing the whole session to another day.
Senior pictures outfit tip: if you have red hair PLEASE wear blue! That navy sweater on Jackson was absolutely perfect! I also love that light blue on him since it really matches his eye color! This location was great for him because he appreciates architecture and these old buildings in Canton were a great fit for him and the outfits he chose.
