Having your pictures taken can feel weird. I get it. How do I know? Because every now and then I muster up the courage to have my own pictures taken; to stand in front of the camera instead of behind it. Wanna know what makes all the difference in the world in how comfortable you feel? The person who is taking the pictures - your photographer!
THE BACKSTORY - Confidence & Trust
A couple months ago, my friend Michelle from Around About Magazines, asked me to send her my own headshot for a story she was writing for the magazines. *gasp! Seriously?! I realized my most current headshot was from almost 5 years ago when I had short hair and some of it was purple. I knew I was going to need to take a newer picture so I set up my tripod in my garage and set it to timer. Yeah, that doesn't work well for me even though I know a ton of amazing photographers who take beautiful self-portraits that way. But since the picture was needed right away I chose the least awkward one and sent that to Michelle. It made me realize that I was very overdue for some quality portraits of just me; not me with my kids, nor me with Brian, nor me in a group of other photographers. Just me.
My wonderful photographer friend Adrienne was also in need of current headshots so we decided to take some for each other with some bonus hanging out time afterward over dinner. So here's the thing: I already know I love her work so I could trust her to take pictures that I would like! This trust thing is pretty important when it comes to making yourself a little vulnerable (in all aspects of life by-the-way not just with pictures). We had fun doing this together and we both got some fantastic headshots for our websites!
TIPS FOR CHOOSING
When choosing your photographer look at their work first: do you like their style of editing whether it's bright and airy or dark and moody? Are the people in the pictures awkwardly posed or do they look comfortable and relaxed? Do you feel a sense of connection or a certain emotion when you look at their work? Choose a photographer because you love their work, not just because you know them or because they only charge $50 (the saying, "You get what you pay for" is so accurate).
One of the things I feel most confident about in my work as a senior photographer is making you feel at ease! Getting to know you and your preferences is a crucial part of helping you feel comfortable and ready for your senior session. I also won't pose you awkwardly embracing a wall or waiting to be flattened by an oncoming train on the railroad tracks (this is dangerous and considered trespassing btw). My goal is to take the best pictures of you that you've ever had and for you to have a great time while doing it!
Send me a message and tell me more about you so that we can plan the perfect session!
And if you're needing new headshots and social media content, Adrienne is an amazingly talented photographer who can help you in your growing business!
